Start Diving
New to scuba? Here's the practical version: how certification actually works, how the major training agencies compare, and what gear is worth owning on day one versus renting until you know how often you'll dive.
The Certification Pathway
This four-stage structure is standard across every major training agency — only the pacing and materials differ.
E-Learning / Knowledge Development
Work through course theory — dive physics, physiology, equipment, and safety — online at your own pace or in a classroom, before you get in the water.
Confined Water Dives
Practice core skills in a pool or a pool-like environment: mask clearing, buoyancy control, regulator recovery — building muscle memory somewhere controlled and shallow.
Open Water Dives
Apply those skills across a series of supervised dives in open water, typically around four dives over one or two days, directly supervised by an instructor.
Certification
Once you've met the knowledge and skills requirements, you're certified — a credential recognized by dive operators worldwide, with no expiration date.
Certification Agencies Compared
PADI, SSI, SDI, and NAUI all lead to a recognized open-water certification through the same four-stage pathway above — the differences are mostly organizational.
| Dimension | PADI | SSI | SDI | NAUI |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Structure | For-profit | For-profit | For-profit | Nonprofit |
| Global recognition | The world's largest recreational diver training organization — dive shops and certified instructors in nearly every dive destination. | Large international network of training centers and dive resorts, with strong ties to resort-based travel destinations. | Established worldwide with a smaller footprint than PADI or SSI; sister agency to TDI (technical) and ERDI (public safety diving). | One of the oldest diver training agencies, founded in 1960; well recognized, especially in North America. |
| E-learning | Yes — self-paced app and online course, widely used. | Yes — self-paced digital app-based courses. | Yes — online academic sessions alongside in-person training. | Yes, typically paired with more traditional classroom instruction. |
| Typical course structure | Standard e-learning → confined water → open water pathway; heavily standardized across instructors worldwide. | Same general pathway, often bundled tightly with resort dive packages and specialty courses. | Same general pathway, with an easier on-ramp into SDI's technical-diving sister agency, TDI, later on. | Same general pathway, historically known for emphasizing dive theory and independent diver judgment. |
| Cost | Varies by location and shop. | Varies by location and shop. | Varies by location and shop. | Varies by location and shop. |
All four are internationally recognized training organizations — any of them will get you a certification that dive operators worldwide accept. Availability of a given agency varies by dive shop and region, so the practical starting point is often simply which agency your local shop teaches.
