The Ocean Current Method
Most divers try to memorize species and hope one matches what they see. Experienced divers do something else — they run a process of elimination: depth, habitat, season, shape, and behavior each rule out possibilities until one supported identification remains. This is that process, trained as five deliberate steps.

STEP 01
PREDICT— What should I expect?
Read the environmental cues before you even see the animal — depth, water temperature, habitat type, and season narrow the realistic starting set.

STEP 02
DETECT— What clues can I gather?
Notice the first durable signals — silhouette, proportion, fin structure, posture, and rhythm of movement — without forcing a name yet.

Silhouette & Body Ratio
Deep-bodied
Tall, laterally flattened outline — angelfish, butterflyfish, batfish.
Torpedo-shaped
Long, fusiform outline built for sustained speed — jacks, tuna, barracuda.
Water Column Depth Band
Benthic
Resting on or hugging the bottom — rays, flounder, scorpionfish.
Pelagic
Cruising the open water column, rarely touching structure — sharks, tuna, mantas.
Swimming Cadence
Labriform rowing
Pectoral fins alone row the body forward, tail nearly still — wrasses, parrotfish.
Subcarangiform undulation
Power comes from a body wave building through the rear third and tail — most reef fish, sharks.
Approach Behavior
Curious / cleaner interaction
Holds position or approaches divers — cleaner wrasse, some groupers, curious turtles.
Evasive flight
Immediate distance-opening on approach, often a burst of speed — skittish reef fish, most sharks.
STEP 03
INTERPRET— What do they mean?
Turn isolated observations into meaning. Movement suggests feeding strategy; posture suggests structure; habitat changes the weight of every clue.

STEP 04
DIFFERENTIATE— What separates them?
Compare the remaining candidates on the few traits that actually decide the call — shared features confirm the group, decisive marks separate it.
Worked example: Both are common, docile reef sharks under 2m — the fin markings that give each species its name are the fastest way to tell them apart.

STEP 05
COMMIT— What is my best call?
Make the call, rate your confidence honestly, then verify. The gap between confidence and accuracy is where real calibration develops.
Confidence calibration
Scored with a Brier-style calibration check: the further your stated confidence sits from the actual outcome, the more it costs you. Honest uncertainty scores better than false bravado — the goal is calibration, not just correctness.
